On the map of Russia with the same name, there are two administrative units located nearby. This is the Altai Territory and the Altai Republic, with a territory not exceeding 260 km2. However, traditionally, “Altai” means both of these regions.
Gorny Altai is located in several countries: the Russian Federation, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China. The climate here is sharply continental and quite capricious, so warm clothes come in handy even in summer.
The name of the region is of Mongolian origin (from "Altan") and means "golden." And indeed, Altai is a chest with golden jewels: mountains and coniferous forests, alpine meadows and waterfalls, transparent rivers and lakes. The nature here is amazing and inimitable, it’s not for nothing that the region is famous for its numerous places included in the UNESCO list: Belukha Mountain, Lake Teletskoye, Katunsky and Altai Nature Reserves.
Fans of magic rituals will be able to see the living shamans and join the world of the mysterious and inexplicable. In general, here everyone will find what to see and do.

Now the situation has changed dramatically, and tourism in Altai has received a “second wind”. There is a reconstruction of bridges, roads and recreation centers. As a result, more than 100 complexes and bases for all tastes are already available to tourists: from cheap campgrounds to suites with European quality.

Connoisseurs of "wild" tourism note
Where to go savages? Every year, places for a secluded, relaxing holiday in the region are becoming less and less. Those who prefer to explore new routes with a backpack and live in a tent should pay a visit to Kosh-Agachsky district. The remotest settlement of the Altai Republic is the village of Belyashi (or Jazzator).
1.5 thousand people live in the village. In the center of the village there is a snack bar and several shops. Not so long ago, hydropower stations were built here to provide the village with electricity. Mobile communication is there, but it works intermittently. Once in the vicinity of Beljashi, you realize how beautiful it is in the Altai in the summer. The village stands at the confluence of the rivers Ak-Alaha and Jazzator. Mountains rise around it: Iktu peak is visible, spurs of the South Chuy ridge. Not far from the settlement is the Ukok Plateau.
Possible option for travelers to Lake Teletskoye - Chulyshmanskaya Valley. Fans of "wild" tourism, vacationers with children, if desired, can stay at the campsite. In the equipped summer camps there is a minimum set of amenities: sauna, cafe, lodging for the night. The favorite resting place of savages is the bank of the Swan River (Turochaksky district). Going on an independent journey, it is worth knowing that the movement around the Altai Nature Reserve by car is limited. For example, you can not drive a car directly to the river Katun.

But thousands of tourists come here year after year to look at the unique beauty filled with mystery and mystery ... In the area of Lake Teletskoye there are many complex routes (if you book a tour of the Altai).
The most famous town on Teletsky is the village of Artybash. Here the road ends and in the summer months the village becomes a local tourist center. This is where the camp sites are located, excursions take place from here, and, of course, the most interesting and active routes start from here.
You can drive to the lake from two sides.
For those who are interested in the path more difficult and far away - the Southern coast of Lake Teletskoye. To get there, you need to drive through the pass Katu-Yaryk and the valley of the river Chulyshman. The road is quite tiresome, but the views here are beautiful. Read at the end of this article in more detail. You can stay in houses or in tents.
A simpler way is to drive up to Teletskoye Lake from the north side through Artybash.
Turquoise Katun is a tourist complex, which is located on the left bank of the Katun River, in the area of the Red Stone Mountain. That is, it is not the whole Katun, but only a part of the coastal zone. Here you will even see alpine meadows, forests with different tree species and a mountainous landscape. The total area of 32.3 sq. Km. The complex is actively developing.
In the central part are the main objects:
- artificial lake with an area of 7 hectares, heated to 23 degrees. For comparison, the temperature in Katun on the hottest days barely exceeds 10 degrees.

The Scythian peoples who lived here before have long since endowed the reservoir with the magical properties of making wishes come true!
At the bottom of the Spring, two lines intersecting each other were found. Scientists consider these furrows to be abnormal (in the good sense of the phrase). The water is both bitter and salty.
Lake Bolshaya Yarovoye Lake is located on a plateau, the trees on which are practically absent. The banks of the Yarovoy are quite high, and the south and southwest of the coastal territory are carved by ravines.
The lake is closed, nothing flows into it and nothing flows out. The composition of the water is unique, enriched with minerals, among other things - Artemia lives in the lake, dying off, it mixes with salts and silt, forming an impressive mud layer endowed with healing properties. The taste of water in addition to salinity has a bitterness, the lake belongs to the rapa-type basin, which is powered by underground keys.
The dirt of the Big Spring Lake is comparable in its indicators to the mud of lakes of such resorts as Odessa, Saki, Staraya Russa. Not very far from the Spring is another, but a small lake Karachi, which has nothing to do with Altai, but is also known for its therapeutic mud. In contrast to the Spring in Karachi, the rest is wild, although there is a sanatorium, which was founded during the reign of the king (but the prices are still).
And many go to Yarovoye, photos from there are not always easy to distinguish from Anapa, for example. Also sand, sun, lots of people on the beach. There are many sunny days, dry climate. Lake Bolshoy Yarovoye is perfect for health tourism. The territory is equipped, there are guest houses and high-rise buildings where apartments are rented. The spring was endowed with the status of a natural monument in 1978.

The district includes the valley of the lower Katun and a system of small mountain rivers. The district begins in the village of Ust-Sema, if you turn to the Chemal route from the Chuisky tract, which goes across the bridge to the left bank of the Katun.
Chemalsky district in the tourist plan is one of the most developed. It is accessible in terms of transport, has favorable climatic conditions, a unique and very picturesque landscape, as well as cultural and historical sites. On the territory of the district built tourist bases and recreation centers.
As in the whole of Altai, different excursions are offered along thematic routes by car, on foot or on horseback. The flow of the Katun in this area is not very rapid, which makes it possible to make a rafting with instructors for tourists with a low degree of preparation.
Archaeological sites are concentrated south of Chemal along the Katun, on the section of the road from Elandy to Kuyus. These are the sites of ancient people of different epochs, mounds, burial grounds, rock paintings. Here is the famous Chemal hydroelectric station, the temple of St. John the Divine on the island of Patmos. The valley of the Lower Katun can be called an ideal place for those who like to combine outdoor recreation, excursions with comfort.
The highest point of the Altai Mountains is located on the Katunsky ridge. There are various names in local dialects: Uch-Sumer, Kadyn-Bazhy, Muztau Shyny.

Summer is cool here. The average temperature at the foot of the Belukha in summer is +6 C. Then an incredibly severe winter comes (up to -48 ° C). Snow can fall in the summer, rain - a common thing.
At the foot of the Belukha, dense coniferous forests and berry bushes, birch and alpine grasses, tundra lichens and red book flowers coexist peacefully.
The fauna of the Belukha is ruled by small rodents - mice, voles. Sometimes the stony slopes of the mountain will be honored by the presence of a lynx and a Siberian goat, or even a rare predator, the snow leopard.
Birds have chosen Belukha. Here partridges, passerines and even golden eagles lodge.
Belukha Mountain is shrouded in myths and legends of varying degrees of gloom. The most famous one says that at the foot of the mountain there is a gate to Shambhala (or Belovodye). Modern admirers of the ideas of the well-known Roerichs consider Belukh to be a place of power and the only safe place on Earth in case of the next end of the world.
Martian landscapes on the village of Beltir
And if you go to the same to the Sofia glacier or Karagemsky and other gorges, you will see such landscapes. Places in Altai are not popular among tourists. So to speak, for the sophisticated. But if you compare with a photo from Mars - it is very similar (not counting the sky).
Aya is very popular in Altai and also a warm lake. The dimensions of the lake are small - 409x 190 m, depth on average 12 m, maximum depth 24 m., Water temperature in July + 22 + 24 0С.
On the shore of the lake there is an equipped beach (water slide, sun lounger rental, showers, toilet), a boat dock. Summer cafes and retail outlets in the vicinity are also present. Aya Lake offers a number of routes from other holiday destinations in Altai. For example, from the area of the lower Katun conduct scheduled excursions, including visits to Lake Aya.
At Lake Aya, healthy air, a lot of sun. The shores of the lake are surrounded by low cliffs, covered with a mixed forest. Not only residents of the nearby territories come here, but from all over Russia and from its borders. Lake Aya is located just 450 meters from the left bank of the Katun at an altitude of 380 m above sea level.
Mountain trails in the area of Aktru gorge, trail to the Blue Lake and Aktru glacier
There are many places in Aktru gorge where you can go on foot. The routes here are very difficult, where you can go only with equipment and bundles, and there are simple, a day or even faster. There is the same name base "Aktru". There climbers come, they can also clarify about the routes.
It’s not always and not everyone can drive to the Aktru base. You need to know the road, and not every car is needed ...
Legendary place, shrouded in mystery and legends. The Ukok Plateau is located at the junction of the borders of Kazakhstan, China, Mongolia and Russia. Height is 2200-2500 m. It is windy here, in winter the temperature drops to -50. The highest point of Ukok is Kuyten-Uul mountain 4374 (the second highest in Altai).
It was here that an ancient burial site was found, from which the mummy of a woman, called the Princess of Ukok, was extracted. Local residents are still struggling with the authorities for the return of the princess to the burial, the fact that they took her from the plateau is considered bad. The place is strange, cold, wonderful. But pulls to itself again and again ... Drive here more likely in August and September. In spring and early summer there is a lot of water, sometimes snow. You can drive to Ukok either through the Warm Key Pass (the most likely way), or across the Jazzator River. On the Ukok Plateau there are organized tours in groups.
- Cave Den Hyena
- Silur section,
- log terrible
- Seven-cave mountain
- Tigirek fortress.
Within Tigirek, more than 600 species of plants grow, many mammals (65 species) and birds (117 species). Here lives the brown bear, roe deer, elk and deer, as well as Siberian weasels, sable, ermine, squirrel, white hare and chipmunk. You can see (although less often) wolverine, weasel, lynx, musk deer. There is a mass of feathered creatures in the reserve: for example, black grouse, hazel grouse, tawny long-tailed owl, moss-footed owl, nutcracker, wood grouse.
The relief of small elevations stretching across the reserve, surmounted by cupola peaks, the shape of which gave the name to the reserve ("tigirek" translated into Russian as "rounded, smooth"). In winter places are dangerous, especially in the south-eastern part, where avalanches, landslides and debris are frequent. In the east, canyons and gorges are located, and the north-west is represented by flatness.
The historical monument - the ruins of the Tigirek Fortress - dates back to the 18th century. At one time, the fortress had the role of an outpost of the Kolyvan-Kuznetsk line of fortification. The remains of the fortress - part of the era of Russian settlements in the territory of Altai, over the mines and factories which hung the threat of raids dzungar. Today, a piece of history is a memorable building of military engineering art.
Several tourist routes have been laid across the protected area, which can be overcome on horseback or on foot. These roads are associated with inspection of colorful landscapes woven by dark-taiga, steppe meadows, mixed forests, woven birch, pine and fir trees. Viewing platforms of natural origin are beautiful panoramas of the river valleys of the Big Tigirek and Ini. The trail linking the villages of Cineta and Tigirek can present a meeting with large birds of prey and ungulates represented by elk and roe deer.
Within the Altai Territory, the Tigirek Reserve is the only specially protected area of the federal scale.
The Edelweiss Valley (Yarlu Valley) is one of the most beautiful and amazing places in Gorny Altai. It is located not far from Belukha Mountain, to the left of Lake Akkem, at an altitude of about 2000 m above sea level. The name of the valley is really saying: here grow very rare in nature flowers listed in the Red Book - Edelweiss.
Small, fluffy, very gentle looking! Even in the valley is a fortress of stones. This place is definitely sacred to people, as evidenced by the numerous stone figures built inside the fortress.
A large array of ancient rock paintings at the age of more than 5 thousand images. According to scientists who studied Kalbak-Tash, drawings were created by people who lived here from the times of the Neolithic period (IV-VI centuries. BC) to the Middle Ages (VIII-X centuries AD.). On the stones you can see the figures of animals that inhabited the Altai several thousand years ago, hunting scenes and various, including solar, characters (which once again indicates that swastikau did not come up with Hitler, and its meaning is completely different than many people think). Petroglyphs are marked with both stone and metal tools. By the ancient Turkic era, researchers include well-preserved runic inscriptions. Some of the depicted scenes are easily correlated with the famous Altai myths.
You can get to the rock complex from the Chuisky tract. It is located on the right bank of the river. After the mark “723 km” you need to turn left between the fourth and fifth pillars of power lines and walk about 20 meters.
Lower Shavlinskoe Lake
The lake lies in the spurs of the North-Chuisky ridge at an altitude of almost 2000 m above sea level and is framed by picturesque high peaks, from the glaciers of which the Right Shavla River flows. This is one of the most popular tourist sites. Hiking and horseback trails. The eastern shore of the lake is covered with a good larch and cedar forest, in which lingonberries and blueberries are thrown in, and in the arid summer - many mushrooms. Here live the chipmunks.
The lake water is clean, grayling is found here. Tourists who stand on the shores of Nizhny Shavlinsky use water from mountain streams flowing into the lake for drinking and kitchen needs. Among the inhabited eastern shore is Poliana Idols, where wooden sculptures made by the hands of the people visiting these places are exhibited. And the opposite western shore of the lake is steep and rocky, and there are no places for bivouacs on it.
To the lake there is a walking route about 35 km long from the village of Chibit. It is laid along the trail through the Oroy pass (about 2200 m) to the plateau of Yeshtykol. And the final part of the path goes along the path on the right side of the valley of the Shavla River.
Pros and cons of self-leisure in Altai
- The ability to touch the pristine nature
- Most attractions are open to the public - rarely where you have to pay for entry
- No restrictions - build the route of the tour as you want, but taking into account the capabilities of your car
- The region has a well-developed road network - on the main road, the Chui road, excellent asphalt
- No problem with living even in remote areas
- Unpredictable weather - sudden rain or frost can ruin all plans.
- Some areas can only be reached by SUV.
- There are almost no luxury hotels with modern amenities - very often accommodation in campsites and camping with a toilet "in the yard"
- The official holiday season lasts just over two months - from mid-June to late August.
- Indigenous people outside popular tourist routes are not always friendly.
If you plan to choose Altai, the best places to rest here will not always be associated with what Mother Nature created, and the Katu-Yaryk Pass will be just such a place. It is hard to believe in this, but in two years a serpentine road with nine turns over the cliffs was created by three bulldozer workers. The pass was discovered in 1989, and it became the only land route to the isolated Chulyshman valley.
Before the advent of the road, they got here by water, or dangerous mountain trails on horseback, and the prepared path was a salvation for the locals, who from ancient times lived far from civilization. And for tourists, too, using the pass, as part of the route to the southern shore of Lake Teletskoye, where, in principle, to get and so difficult.
If we speak in terms of numbers, then Katu-Yaryk has no analogues anywhere in the world. He was literally cut down in the mountain with a slope of 70 °, while the slope of the road on average does not exceed 10-15 °. The total length of the pass - 3.5 km, with each stage ends with a sharp turn over the precipice. Here there are special pockets for cars to be able to disperse - the main part of the road is designed for only one.
The elevation difference from the entrance to the top point is more than 800 meters, which is comparable to the extreme slopes of ski resorts, only you will have to go by car. By the way, not every car is able to withstand both the ascent and the descent - you need good brakes and a powerful enough engine, and on the ascent, the front-wheel drive "cars" have nothing to do at all. For such cars provide daily towing services.
Getting to the Kathu-Yaryk pass is not easy, like all the beautiful places of Altai, it is located not only from large settlements, but also from the main transport artery of the region - the Chuisky tract. We'll have to ride not only on good asphalt from Biysk to Seminsky Pass, but also on a dirt road starting outside the village of Aktash. After it you need to keep the path to Ulagan, and from there to the road to Balyktuyul and Chulyshman. The path is not long, but according to the signs it is quite possible to orient even a novice driver.
Arriving at the turn of the pass, you can not even approach it - the view opens immediately, and it will not leave anyone indifferent. It is safe to say that the view from the observation deck on the pass is one of the most beautiful and memorable in Altai.
When asked: Altai, the best places to rest, you will almost certainly be advised to visit the Devil's Finger - an interesting shape mountain located near Lake Aya. Despite its gloomy name, this object is considered to be perhaps the most visited place in its area, and the legends about its appearance are also interesting.
Indigenous people assure tourists that the one whom we call “the devil” is a legendary monster named Cherto, which has plundered the Altai lands from time immemorial. Naturally, in the legends he was defeated by a local bogatyr, who trampled the cunning enemy with the hoofs of his frisky horse, and only a finger, squeezed in impotent rage, remained stuck above the ground.
Indeed, many guests, rising to this sight, often recall the legend with the words that only a bogatyr can overcome such distances. However, it is forbidden to go on cars only on one side of the Devil's Finger, other entrances are open, however, it is better to have an SUV with high ground clearance so as not to get bogged down.
To get to the mountain is best from the village of Katun, holding the only, but the main landmark - the TV tower. On some camping sites there will be signs, in which side of the Devil's finger, in extreme cases - you can always ask directions from passing villagers or the same tourists as you.
Read more about the Devil's Finger, as well as see photos, you can in the section with the stories of travelers on the portal Vipgeo.
The beautiful places of Altai are not only lakes, rivers and caves, they are also islands, at least one island of Patmos on the Katun river is worth a visit even for those who did not plan to come here. A small piece of land, which can only be reached on foot on a suspension bridge, is interesting to everyone - both for its history and for the views that open during walks through its main attraction.
And there is only one here - this is the temple of the Apostle John the Theologian, built in 2001 with the money of private patron Viktor Pavlov, an ordinary Moscow photojournalist, who sold the apartment to restore the shrine rebuilt in the 30s. Now the church is transferred to a nunnery, but there are only time limitations to visits - both men and women are equally welcome, both as guests and as pilgrims.
The easiest way to get to the island of Patmos is from the village of Chemal. Driving in the direction of the pine forest, it is important not to miss the pointer, passing that, you will have to go back through the forest road. Turning where it should be, you will see a wide asphalt parking zone - it is not guarded, but here it is not necessary, leave the car and walk along the bridge to the island.
You will get a lot of impressions already on the bridge, which staggers under your feet at a height of about 20 meters above the turbulent Katun. On the island itself, besides the church, you can see the image of the Mother of God carved in the rock and the original icon in the rock niche for the plot of adoration of the Magi to the baby Jesus.
In addition, you expect unforgettable views of the Katun and its rocky shores from both the island and the suspension bridge.
Those who wish can walk from here along the “goat path” to another popular local landmark, the Chemal hydroelectric station and the place where the Chemal River flows into Katun.
